What Would Your Digital Documentary Say?

If your digital life was a film, would you want a front-row seat?
Last week, I had the honor of speaking at the Teens Cyber Hygiene Bootcamp hosted by Deliverance Church Makerere Hill. From the moment I stepped into the room, I could feel something special brewing. This wasn’t going to be a typical session filled with tech jargon or a checklist of cyber safety tips. It was deeper, more personal. We were there to explore the idea of digital footprints—the online trails we leave behind, and how those trails can shape our future in ways we don’t always expect.
Even before I took the mic, the conversation was already alive. A panel discussion featuring the teens themselves was underway, and their insights were nothing short of brilliant. They weren’t just answering questions—they were unpacking real-life experiences, raising important concerns, and echoing thoughts I had planned to share in my session. It honestly felt like they were inside my head, pulling out the very themes I was going to explore. That level of engagement, that shared wavelength, made the entire bootcamp electric.
When it was finally my turn to speak, I didn’t need to break the ice—the room was already warm. We dove into reflection together, asking some tough but necessary questions: What shows up when someone Googles your name? Would your posts, comments, and likes make you proud—or leave you cringing? And here’s one that got everyone thinking: If your digital life inspired a movie, what genre would it be? Would it be a comedy? A drama? A thriller? A feel-good documentary or a cautionary tale? Whatever the answer, one thing became clear—we’re all creating digital stories, and one day, someone might be watching.
We unpacked real-life stories of people whose digital footprints opened doors—and others who learned the hard way that one post can change everything. This wasn’t about fear. It was about awareness. It was about realizing that while you may not always see your digital footprint, others might—and the impact can be long-lasting.
And that’s the heart of what cyber hygiene really is. It’s not just about firewalls and strong passwords. It’s about being conscious of how your online behavior reflects who you are, what you believe, and where you’re headed. Every post, like, story, and reaction adds another brushstroke to the portrait of your digital self. That self may be seen by future employers, school admissions teams, new friends—or even complete strangers. And while the internet may not forget, you have the power to decide what it remembers.
What struck me most was how willing the teens were to lean into the conversation. They weren’t just nodding along—they were contributing. They understood that being cyber smart doesn’t mean being paranoid or hiding from the internet. It means being intentional. It means knowing the difference between a moment and a mistake that lingers. It means realizing that we are all writing our digital stories every day—and we have the right to write them well.
To the amazing team at Deliverance Church Makerere Hill, thank you for creating a space that welcomed truth, learning, and reflection. You didn’t just host an event—you sparked something meaningful. And to the teens who showed up with honesty, curiosity, and boldness: you are the reason I believe the next generation can be not just tech-savvy, but wisely digital. You’re not just growing up online—you’re growing into a future where your choices matter more than ever.
So let me leave you with this: if your online life became a documentary, what kind of story would it tell? Would it inspire? Embarrass? Make someone laugh, cry, or learn something new? The great thing is—you’re still the author. You get to shape that story. And you don’t need to be perfect. You just need to be aware, curious, and in control.
If you’ve made it this far, I’m going to assume we’re friends now, right? And what do friends do? They like, they comment, and they definitely stay in touch!

The realisation that one careless post could lead to my down fall many years later, and that the antidote to this is knowledge and being conscious of what I like, post, follow etc.
It was a pleasure hosting you at Deliverance Church and learning from the wealth of experience you have amassed through research and case studies shared. Thank you.
